Board Certified Plastic Surgeon in Sterling, Virginia Liposuction, Abdominoplasty (Tummy Tuck) & Body Contouring Dr. David Berman has extensive experience (over 18 years in private practice) in all aspects of liposuction, liposculpting and other body contouring procedures such as tummy tuck and breast augmentation. He performs tumescent liposuction which means that large volumes of fluid are instilled into the areas prior to actually doing the liposuction. The fluid loosens the fat, decreases bruising and post-op discomfort, and generally results in less down time. Most of the liposuction procedures he performs are enhanced by using an ultrasonic or laser-assisted technique. This allows more fat to be removed in a less traumatic fashion. Dr. Berman is the only plastic surgeon in Northern VA, who has the most advanced SmartLipo machine. SmartLipo is a revolutionary approach to removal of small amounts of fat anywhere on the body (not on the face at present, but is excellent for the neck). It can be done under pure local anesthetic or with some oral sedation. Dr. Berman performs SmartLipo right in his office and the patient can return to work in 1-2 days compared to 5 days with traditional liposuction techniques. The procedure is very simple. Dr. Berman carefully marks the area to be treated then numbs it by the infiltration of tumescent fluid. He makes a very tiny incision of about 3-5mm and inserts a fiber optic cable into the fat zone. A laser light travels down the cable and both melts the fat and coagulates any blood vessels. There is generally little to no bruising. After this is carried out, a liposuction cannula is passed and this removes the liquefied fat. Generally one suture closes the wound. I allow my patients to return to full exercising in 7-10 days. They can shower the next day. A comfortable but snug garment is worn post op. it is important to realize that the improvement may continue for up to 6 months. It is also thought that the heating of the skin from the Smartlipo causes additional skin tightening. While SmartLipo can be performed in Dr. Berman’s office, more traditional liposuction is performed in a fully accredited facility (either Fair Oaks Hospital or Countryside Ambulatory Surgery Center), under general anesthesia. This is especially true if liposuction is combined with other surgical procedures, such a tummy tuck and/or breast augmentation. Dr. Berman, of course, performs the entire range of plastic surgery.
